What size soccer ball do I need?

Buying the right size soccer ball for your kid is an important decision. You don't want to show up to the field on the first day of practice with a soccer ball your child isn't allowed to use!

Regulation sizes are determined by age, and practicing with a ball that's the correct size and weight will help your child build muscle memory for dribbling, shooting, and passing.

Size 4 Soccer Ball

A Size 4 soccer ball is used by players 12 years old and under.

It’s 25-26 inches in circumference and weighs between 12-13 ounces or about as much as a can of soda. Proper inflation for a Size 4 soccer ball is between approximately 8.5 and 15.6 psi. A good inflation test is to hold the ball at head height and drop it (safely!). If it bounces up to around your waist, it’s likely well-inflated.

Because it is smaller, younger kids with smaller feet can easily control the Size 4 soccer ball. This allows them to complete drills and build muscle memory without pushing their legs and ankles to their limits.

Size 5 Soccer Ball

Players 13 years old and over use a Size 5 soccer ball, including those in the highest soccer leagues in Europe.

It’s 27-28 inches in circumference and is a little heavier than a Size 4 ball, at about 14-16 ounces. Proper inflation for a Size 5 ball is the same as Size 4, between approximately 8.5 and 15.6 psi, and the bounce test works here as well. Under or over-inflating the ball can affect its performance and longevity, just like it does with tires.

The larger size provides more surface area for different creative skills and allows for more dynamic touches.
