Ever seen a football player run with a big parachute behind him? He’s cross-training his leg muscles to be explosive in-game situations. A baseball player might lift weights for a better swing, a basketball player might run sprints to stay conditioned throughout a game.
Here are three boxing cross-training exercises for better results in the boxing gym (or wherever you set up your DribbleUp Boxing gear!)

Running
This one may seem like an easy one: in almost every sport, running is a great cross-training method. However, in boxing, running adds two advantages: first, it helps with your conditioning, and second, it helps you develop leg muscles that are great for your boxing regiment.
Conditioning is vital in boxing. In order to go long rounds in the ring or maintain consistency throughout a high-powered HIIT set, you’ll need to have good conditioning. Increased lung capacity and muscle durability will give you the ability to throw a punch in round 12 with the same power as round 1.
The power in your “power” punches comes from your legs, specifically your quads. Running helps to strengthen your leg muscles for more powerful punches and better overall durability when boxing. Make sure you don’t skip leg day!
Swimming
Like running, swimming is a great source of cardio. A good swimming session expands your lung capacity and helps your body get used to high levels of exertion. However, unlike running, you get the benefit of a full-body workout. Swimming works your arms, legs, core, and everything in between!
Nearly every type of swimming is great for your arms and shoulders, but certain strokes will work in other areas of your body! Breaststroke has a unique kick that works your hip flexors and quads. Butterfly, on the other hand, is amazing for strengthening your core.
Swimming gives you extra conditioning for your boxing training and helps you develop lean muscle for powerful punches, quick movements, and long-lasting muscle endurance.
Jump Rope
Remember that scene in Rocky IV when Rocky Balboa jumps rope to intense music in his secret training hideaway? That wasn’t just to look cool – jumping rope has become a favorite cross-training exercise for boxers and non-boxers alike.
Stop us if you’ve heard this one before, but jumping is a great source of cardio and will help you stay energetic and alert throughout your training. However, unlike the others, jumping rope is also great for your footwork and agility. That’s why boxers have jumped rope as a method of cross-training for years!
Your feet are essential in boxing. A good stance will give you the dexterity to move around, as well as a foundation for your power punches. Want some more tips on your stance and form? Check out our blog for more tips!
